There are contested elections on the following two (2) positions on the ATRS Board of Trustees scheduled for March 2015: Position #2 (Member Trustee- 2nd Congressional District) and Position #8 (Member Trustee- Minority Trustee).
Position #2 up for election is a certified, active teacher in the second congressional district.
Eligible voters for Position #2 shall be active members, regardless of credited service, employed by participating employers located in the respective congressional districts and who are employed in a position that requires a state teaching license or the equivalent.
Position #8 up for election is a membership-wide minority position.
Eligible voters for Position #8 shall be all active members, regardless of credited service, and retirant members.
The Board of Trustees employs an independent contractor who will mail ballots to eligible voters' addresses on record and will also collect, count and certify election results.
If no candidate received at least 50% of votes cast by eligible voters on the first ballot, a run-off election will be held between the two (2) candidates receiving the highest number of votes for the position. The schedule for the run-off election will be as follows:
- Run-off ballots mailed: Friday, May 1, 2015
- Deadline for run-off ballots to be returned: Monday, June 1, 2015
- Results certified: Friday, June 5, 2015
If any of the above fixed dates fell on a weekend or holiday, the date was moved to the next regular work day according to ATRS policy.
If a candidate receives at least 50% of the votes cast on the first ballot, he/she will be declared the winner of the election and will assume office on July 1, 2015. If a run-off election is necessary, the candidate receiving at least 50% of the votes cast will be declared the winner of the election and will assume office on July 1, 2015.
The term of office for each elected trustee is six (6) years with the exception to Position #2, which is a one (1) year term as it is completing an existing six (6) year term. Each trustee shall continue to serve as trustee until his or her successor is elected.
Two trustee positions, Position #6 and Position #7, are unopposed, so there will be no election for those positions.
